The multiplicity and mirroring of female characters have been themes in Hamaguchi's previous work, as well as in his new work, Accident and Imagination. The previous works, "Happy Time" and "Night and Night", literally have the taste of novels, while "Accident and Imagination" can be said to be a collection of short stories. The narrative rhythm reinforces this impression: three episodes, each revolving around a female character, are divided into three acts. Three short films tell the story of an unexpected love triangle, an attempted seduction, and a meeting through a misunderstanding. Although fragmented, the organic narrative flow is maintained and even emphasised. While most of the action takes place in one space, and with only two actors involved, the film doesn't feel like a house drama. Not just because of the dialogue, but also because of its complex notion of time and space, the final episode almost turned into a sci-fi flick. The moments we witness are all connected to a moving universal destiny, marked by choices, regrets, deceptions and coincidences that are the true protagonists of the film.收起全部
